LOADED BAGEL

American food is more than just burgers and fries, and I am ashamed that it took me 32 years to realise this. When we consider the Midwest (where I live), things are drenched in immigrant history, such as Cincinnati’s famous chili, as well as sauerkraut, sausages, of course Chicago is known for it’s deep dish pizza. Oh and who can forget the packed Reuben sandwich (I hasten to add that I am a firm believer that this sandwich originated in Omaha and not¬†New York. New York has enough famous food, they don’t need this one too).

With history and culture shaping so much of how and what we eat here in the US, I love that brands are introducing new ways to enjoy old foods. Take The Dairy Free Co. for example, who recently launched a range of delicious, dairy free products that bring the heat to the bagel competition. Their plant-based spreads are great for dipping, but they are best used when they’re part of a loaded bagel. I love a good, generous schmear¬†of cream cheese on my bagels, and always double layer my smoked salmon (or lox if available), and what better way to honour my everything bagel than with an everything bagel cream cheese spread! The Schmiracle spread by The Dairy Free Co. is a cashew nut “cream cheese” peppered with sesame and poppy seeds, minced garlic and onion, and sea salt. A sizeable spoonful of this, plus smoked salmon, pickled red onions and a handful of fresh dill, and you have the best bagel in town.
